Gun Cases: What You Need to Know

As an avid sportsman and gun owner, you need a no-nonsense gun case to keep your firearms safe and protected. Only the toughest and most reliable cases for pistols and rifles will do cases that offer superior protection and travel ability. Crush-proof cases are the way to go. Not sure which gun will go in the case? Off-the-rack cases at great prices can be customized with foam inserts to carry a variety of firearms.

Pelican Cases

When it comes to gun cases, it’s hard to find any that compare to Pelican. Shield your firearms at home and away with a watertight hard gun case featuring an O-ring seal, heavy-duty latches, and stainless-steel hardware. Fold-down handles give you more room for storage. Crushproof and waterproof, certain cases offer standards of protection demanded by the military and law enforcement. Companies like Cabbage Cases offer an array of styles and designs for every budget.

The Best Gun Cases for Your Needs

Remember, the right gun case offers the peace of mind that your firearms are safe, secure, and protected from damage. Whether you’re headed to the range, the gun shop, or out to the woods to hunt, chances are you’re going to carry your firearm(s) in some sort of gun case. But how do you choose the one that’s right for you? What do you look for? There is a wide variety of options out there at a range of prices and with all sorts of features. From pockets for extra magazines to cases that can carry more than one gun at a time to basic sleeves that offer minimal protection, the options for both rifles and pistols are practically endless.

Hard Cases

Options in the hard-case category are metal and plastic.

  • Metal: Metal cases are often made from aircraft aluminum.
    • Light but also incredibly strong while looking professional
    • Reinforced corners for extra rigidity
    • Highly durable
    • Pricy
  • Plastic: Lightweight, made of composite compounds.
    • Easy to carry
    • Top-notch protection at an affordable price
    • Dense foam lines protect guns
    • Scratch-resistant

Waterproof Cases

A relatively new trend, the waterproof case, was spawned by the technology used to protect outdoor camera equipment. On the upside, your firearm is protected from rain and moisture with this type of case. On the downside, you’ll have to clean every drop of moisture from the barrel and outside before putting it in its case. Any water left will not evaporate in a waterproof case.

Soft Cases

  • The ultimate lightweight solution
  • Nylon material offers excellent protection
  • Versatility: soft foam lining accommodates different styles of firearms
  • Outside pouches for easy access to ammo or other accessories
  • For the range: can store many of the needed supplies

Caution. As you might expect, the soft case does not offer the damage protection of harder materials. What you end up purchasing depends on how you see yourself using the case and for what purpose.

Other considerations:

  • TSA requires lockable cases. If you plan to travel with a firearm, you must secure a padlock-type lock only accessible with a key.
  • Check for comfort. Through it over your shoulder, see how it feels.
  • For a more customizable case, find one with MOLLE Hook-and-Loop on the outside, where you can add dump pouches.
  • Too big or too small isn’t good. Do I plan to throw a pistol case into the range bag? Is there room for extra mags inside? A good rule of thumb is not to get anything smaller than the gun’s box. Don’t try to cram too much gear into too little space.
